Hello, I'm Kaede. I've been sewing and designing fashion for myself since 2001. Around that time I got into design through influences such as Visual kei, and the elaborate costumes of bands such as X-Japan, Malice Mizer, Dir en grey, and Buck-Tick. Around that same time I became interested in manga and anime, and began writing science fiction and fantasy 90-pg novelas and short stories for fun. Other strong influences have been Tolkien's Middle Earth, The Muppets, and 70's glam rock.
In my spare time I am always sewing clothes, or doing some other craft with my hands. I love folk and Celtic music, so I often play mandolin and bodhran when I can find a quiet moment. I've also been playing the electric bass and drums for nearly 10 years. I'm also a movie nut, and love anything by John Cameron Mitchell or Greg Araki.
Nowadays I'm looking foward to venturing further into costume design, to discover more about it that resonates with me and keeps me engaged. This semester at college (Fall 2006) I am creating a fashion line that draws influence from 18th century pirates and Victoriana. It is called The Glorious Mutiny. During the winter/spring of 2006 I worked with the conservation department at the Higgins Armory Museum in Worcester, Massachusetts, as an arms and armor conservation intern. I returned this summer as a solo designer creating historically accurate costumes to be displayed under armor! It was a fantastic opportunity, and I'm just thrilled to have my costumes displayed in a museum.
